A uniquely full-bodied and complex 2004 Merlot

All of the high-quality fruit was estate grown on the 19-acre family vineyard and selected from the vineyard's various microclimates.
Harvested on a cool morning in mid-September 2004, at 27° brix, the wine was field blended with 3.5 tons of Merlot and .5 tons of Syrah. The grapes were crushed, pressed, barreled, and bottled at the former Davis Bynum Winery in the Russian River Valley.
The wine was created following protocol we developed during five years of award-winning amateur winemaking. After fermenting in stainless steel and open tank fermentors for 12 days, the wine was aged in one year-old French oak for 16 months and matured another 2 years in the bottle prior to release.
The wine has a deep rich mouth feel and color, complex flavors, with a long silky finish. Our Fichtenberg Vineyards Merlot pairs well with dishes and meats commonly associated with bigger, bolder varietals.
Although this Merlot is our first commercial release, grower-owner Art Fichtenberg has been making wine at the amateur level since 2000. During this time the wine was enjoyed by family and friends and donated to many charitable events. For years people remarked what a wonderful full-bodied and complex Merlot it was, and sought to purchase it. After receiving these numerous requests we decided to take the big step and produce a limited quantity for sale. This is our first commercial vintage and we hope you enjoy it as much as our family and friends have.
